Post Let's Say NO to Smoking!

Smoking has been Banned by the Government of India in public places. Let's discuss the hazards and ill effects of it with our Tellywood stars...

?Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life.?--Brooke Shields

The BAN on lighting up rolled tobacco or Cigarettes in public places came into effect from Thursday (2nd October), with hotels, restaurants, pubs, offices and even the international airports becoming out of bound for smokers. The ban will also cover pubs as well as private offices and public places like bus stops. Union Health Ministry issued a notification for the ban under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution), Act 2003. The Ban has got a mixed response, with some calling it restraint to their personal freedom while few appreciating the step taken by the Health ministry! Stats show that virtually no one starts smoking as an adult. Ninety percent of all the smokers take their first puff in their teens!!

How our television stars are reacting to this Ban, Let's hear out their point of view As Mark Twain once said "It's easy to quit smoking. I've done it hundreds of times.?

Anand Suryavanshi:

Your views on the ban on Smoking in public places: It is a good thing. Smoking is a dangerous habit, and whoever wants to smoke can do so in a private place without creating an unhealthy atmosphere for people around.

Is this a restraint on the personal freedom of an individual: In a sense it is a restraint as they will not be allowed to smoke as and when they want. But at the same time, hard core smokers will find a way out to smoke. We have smoking rooms in International airports too. But all lies in the manner in which this rule will get implemented.

Passive smoking kills more people than active smoking, what you have to say: Yes, it is very dangerous for the person inhaling it too. It is high time we take care of all this.

Any message that you would want to give: Smoking causes major health problems. I too used to smoke, but have quit smoking now. I will advise all to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Smoking is not going to help you in any way, so please do not add on to your problems.

Jatin Shah:

Your views on the ban on Smoking in public places: Its always good as smoking affects health and I am in support of this rule.

Is this a restraint on the personal freedom of an individual: Well, I guess people who fear to get caught will not do it in public places. But smokers who just cannot go without it will find a place to smoke for sure.

Passive smoking kills more people than active smoking, what you have to say: Not only is it that people who smoke get dragged to this addiction, but they drag along people around them with this bad habit. So I guess a rule like this was needed.

Any message that you would want to give: See, it is not just your life that gets affected with smoking. You will be ruining the life of many connected to you too. If you want to live healthy, then leave smoking. Life is too sweet, so make it precious.

Amit Sareen:

Your views on the ban on Smoking in public places: This is a much awaited rule and will be a welcome change. We all should be coming forward and supporting this rule and make sure it stays. I guess many are really happy that this ban has been implemented.

Is this a restraint on the personal freedom of an individual: Not at all, as smokers just don't see where they are and will find their way out. Above all, there are separate smoking areas with open ventilation put up in most places.

Passive smoking kills more people than active smoking, what you have to say: Exactly. You just go to a restaurant to have healthy food and enjoy your free time. But what do you see there? People smoking their heart out and you getting it all into your system? If people intentionally get into the habit of smoking it is fine, but what about those millions who get dragged to inhaling the smoke passively?

Any message that you would want to give: The only request I make is that we should see to it that this rule does get implemented as it has a huge benefit, especially for our younger generation. This is something that will make our society healthier and more disciplined.

Indraneil Sengupta:

Your views on the ban on Smoking in public places: Perfectly fine. There are loads of people who don't smoke when compared to those who do. With this rule, specific zones will be identified for smokers and this will facilitate a cleaner environment. But the main hurdle is to abide by the rule.

Is this a restraint on the personal freedom of an individual: Not at all. Every individual is free to smoke, and nobody is stopping them from smoking. A hard core smoker will surely find a place to smoke.

Passive smoking kills more people than active smoking, what do you have to say: Very true. I smoke once in a while, but Barkha hates smoking. So I make it a point not to smoke when she is around. When I can be careful for my wife's sake, then I can surely be careful for many others too.

Any message that you would want to give: I am a smoker myself, so I cannot give out any message. But I would say that we need to keep our surrounding clean and respect others who do not smoke.

"The best way to stop smoking is to just stop - no ifs, ands or butts.? The sooner the better!
