With the recent IPL spot-fixing scandal rocking the sporting world and the spate of arrests made by the Mumbai police, one voice seems to stand out; and it's none other than the owner of the Punjab Kings XI, Preity Zinta.

In fact Ms. Zinta, who has till now been pretty vocal over the issue of spot-fixing, saying that stern action should be taken against the offender recommended certain solutions to fix the problem.

The change that Preity is currently recommending that can help put an end to such acts of betting, is apparently the legalization of betting. If what we here is true then Preity has recommended putting franchise owners in the IPL governing council, legalizing betting and carrying out random polygraph tests on players to help ascertain their links to the betting world.

Much like the random doping tests that are carried out, Preity suggests that players should also be subject to random polygraph tests to help dissuade errant players.

Having created a niche space for himself as an actor in Bollywood, Tusshar Kapoor now ventures into film production and will shortly announce the name of his production house along with the news of his first film.

Talking about his ambitions with the production house, Tusshar says, "My production house will surely carve its own niche in the industry. It won't be just another addition to the list of production houses which already exist. I won't produce anything that is mediocre". Adding further, he says, "I will never make abstract, art house cinema. My films will be offbeat, but will also appeal to a mass audience. A good film eventually becomes commercially viable and that's what I am aiming for as a producer."

While details are tightly being kept under wraps, sources reveal that the actor is in talks and is already in the process of short-listing a script.

India’s rising star director Anurag Kashyap has complained that filmmakers in the country still do not enjoy the kind of freedom of space and expression that would allow them to make meaningful films.
“Today, we are forced to treat our audience as children of less than five years and hence we have to only make goody-goody films with a huge dose of escapism. I want to have the option of making films that tackle the issues of Indian society head on, rather than being obliged to refer to them in an oblique fashion," Kashyap said at a discussion on the future of Indian cinema at the Cannes Film Festival.

The discussion centred around the film 'Bombay Talkies', a compilation of four films made by four directors - Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Kashyap - which was premiered here during a special screening at Cannes on Sunday evening.

The screening was followed by a gala dinner. During the discussion, Kashyap openly attacked the numerous barriers and controls that were imposed on cinema in India.

“We cannot even keep surnames for our characters as we do not know who would be offended, so there are far too many special interest groups that we have to take care of. The biggest hurdle is, of course, not being able to make films about the governance of the country. I want to be able to make a film on say the Commonwealth Games scandal, or about the current government. But I cannot,” he said.

The four directors were unanimous that Indian cinema had indeed improved. “We had the first Golden Age of Indian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. Now, I think, with the current crop of filmmakers, we can be sure that we are about to embark upon the second Golden Age. Whether it comes in five years or 10 is not very important, what is key is that we are improving and it gives me a great pleasure to see the young generation of Indian cinema," Johar said.

Talking of the film made by her in the 'Bombay Talkies' series, Akhtar said her first impression on seeing the rough cuts of all four films was that hers was the most beautiful, almost girlie. She was also equally optimistic about the future of Indian cinema, outside the traditional and home markets.

Johar said that while making 'Bombay Talkies', his biggest fear was to know how to make it within the duration and budgetary limits imposed by the producer, Viacom 18.

“I have never made anything with 15 million rupees and in 25 minutes. My prologues last longer and cost more. So, all the time I was trying to sneakily find out what the others were doing,” Johar said, creating a spur of laughter in the room.

Banerjee said his film was adapted from a short story written by Satyajit Ray about a common man who suddenly finds himself on the sets of a film and is obliged to act the role. “I adapted it to the city where I live, Mumbai," he said.

Rishi Kapoor admits that "films are our family business", is happy that his son Ranbir entered filmdom and praises him for taking an unconventional route to stardom without his help.
Rishi told us: "I am very proud that my son is trying to keep the flag of the Kapoor's flying. I always encourage him and want him to do better work."

Rishi wants Ranbir to be successful while being level headed.

"I want his head on his shoulders. I want him to be very realistic about the fact. Films is not just a joke, it's our family business and I am happy that he is serious about his career and his work," said Rishi.

Although Ranbir, 30, had a dull start with 'Saawariya', but thanks to his choice of roles in 'Wake Up Sid', 'Raajneeti', 'Rockstar' and 'Barfi!', the youngster has a carved a niche for himself in just six years.

"He is an actor who has taken a less travelled route. He is choosing different films and doing films that are not the staple diet of film heroes. For that I give him credit. The choice of his films are totally his, all creative decisions are his, and I have no contribution to that at all. People feel I chose his films, but it's not so. I am just his father, not his manager," said Rishi.

Was Ranbir sure about becoming an actor?

"He knew his family business is such, so you are inclined to get into it, which is very natural. That must have influenced him. He wanted to go to a film school, so he went there and got trained as an actor. And God has been kind, he has given him some kind of strength to maintain his name," said Rishi, whose family has been a part of Indian filmdom for the past 85 years.

Ranbir, the great grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, represents the fourth generation of the Kapoors with cousins Karisma and Kareena.

Although his son was experimenting a lot in the beginning, but in his heydays, Rishi was stuck to romantic roles in 'Bobby', 'Khel Khel Mien' and 'Karz'.

He didn't get to experiment much during that time, but recently films like 'Do Dooni Chaar' and 'Agneepath' have given him a chance to make up for the lost opportunities.

"I have never got to play these kind of roles when I was younger. When you are young, you want to do romantic roles. Now I am playing all kinds of roles, which are very prominent to the subject and I am happy that they came my way. I love to experiment with different roles," said the 60-year-old who was tagged "chocolate hero" and "lover boy" in his prime in the 1980s.

Although his father Raj Kapoor was an actor and director par excellence and established R.K. Films, but Rishi - who burnt his fingers by going behind the camera for Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai starrer 'Aa Ab Laut Chalen' in 1999 - has no plans to wear the director's hat.

"I am not planning to direct any film. I have so much work. God has been kind and I am happy with the work I am doing right now. I want to be focused," said the actor busy with 'D-Day', and two more films to be directed under Yash Raj Films banner, 'Kaanchi' and 'Besharam'.

In an interview, Rishi had said that when his first film 'Bobby' came, his actor uncle Shashi Kapoor had arranged for a grand welcome for him at an airport. But the new trend of promotional activities are different and stressful, he says.

"Promotions these days are very stressful. I see my son doing it more than me. He is right now promoting his 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and I see him running around here and there - sometimes in London, sometimes in Dubai. It is very stressful," he said.

Huma Qureshi, who made an impressive debut with Anurag Kashyap's crime thriller 'Gangs Of Wasseypur' last year, will now be seen doing action in Nikhil Advani's 'D-Day' and she is all excited about it.
"I am very excited as, for the first time, I am doing action in a film," she said at an event to launch People magazine.

"It's sort of an action film. It's very real but, at the same time, it's very very slick. It is about agents going into Pakistan and getting back India's most wanted man," she said.

While in 'Gangs Of Wasseypur', Huma worked with stars like Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, in Vishal Bhardwaj's production 'Dedh Ishqiya', she is working with stalwarts like Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah.

'D-Day', releasing July 19, also features Arjun Rampal, Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan and Shruti Haasan.

Four-film-old Huma feels lucky that she is getting to work with such living legends in her films.

"I am very fortunate because I am one of the newest (actors), but I have already worked with some of the best actors we have of our time, whether it's Manoj, Nawazuddin or Irrfan, and then Arshad (Warsi), Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri," she said.

"With each film I feel that my association with some solid actors of our generation is only getting stronger and stronger. I just hope that by being in films, that have such living legends as part of the cast, I only get to learn from them, by watching them and I hope I imbibe something from them," she added.

Huma was recently seen in 'Ek Thi Daayan' opposite Emraan Hashmi that also starred Konkona Sen Sharma and Kalki Koechlin.

Saddened by the current situation in the country, actress-businesswoman Preity Zinta is "thinking" about joining "politics" as she wants to be part of a movement to bring positive changes in India.
Currently busy promoting her first production venture 'Ishkq in Paris', Preity said: "Off late, I have been thinking that I will join politics because it’s so sad what is happening to our country."

"I really want to be somehow involved in positively changing our country... One fine day (I) am going to come out and say vote for me,” she said on 'Star Speak' on UTV Stars.

She has even made an imaginary picture of Preity Zinta, the politician.

She said: "I will be a very glamorous politician. I will have nice hair, nice clothes, and I will not be corrupt. But I think it’s important we start thinking about our country also because it’s really sad what is happening to our country. How much do you genuinely need to eat? 'Khaane ke liye aap biscuit hi khaate ho, gold biscuit to nahi khaate ho'. So, survival is limited to one point. How much more do you want?"

Having said that, she hopes that "people like me don’t have to get into a political future, because there are good people. There are lots of good politicians. Don’t get me wrong, but they are eclipsed by all the corruption. And the only way to make India shine is if all this stops. Because who is the one that suffers...it is always the man on the street and that breaks my heart."

The 38-year-old actress is also the co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team King's XI Punjab.

"In the first film, I was just too shocked and too surprised about the fact that I have even got such a debut," she said.

"He (Shah Rukh) is definitely a friend. He is always been someone who I can rely on or call on any point in the daytime or whatever. He is just somebody to talk to and he has been that person for me in 'Chennai Express' as well."

Directed by Rohit Shetty, 'Chennai Express' is scheduled for release in August this year.

Rishi Kapoor admits that "films are our family business", is happy that his son Ranbir entered filmdom and praises him for taking an unconventional...

Need more freedom for filmmaking in India: Anurag Kashyap

India’s rising star director Anurag Kashyap has complained that filmmakers in the country still do not enjoy the kind of freedom of space and...

His first film did well and he should have his plate full with new assignments, but Varun Dhawan begs to differ. He wants to stick to one film policy and for the time being he would also like to stay single.
"I am doing a film, energies are focused there. I am a firm believer in doing just one film at a time. I am new and should concentrate," Varun told us.

After debuting with 'Student Of The Year' (SOTY), which did fairly good business at the box office, the youngster will be next seen in his father David Dhawan's 'Main Tera Hero'.

His performance in 'Student Of The Year' was greatly appreciated and he feels he shouldn't take success for granted.

"The response was overwhelming, so you can't take the audience's faith for granted. If it is there today, it can all go tomorrow. I need to reach a higher level in my next film," he said.

Varun had been romantically linked to his 'SOTY' co-actor Alia Bhatt.

Asked him about that, Varun clarified: "I don't react to this. If it is a rumour, I don't read it. I try to clear it, but to be honest, I don't know how to clear it."

"I am happy being alone as a person. I wish I could tell people that please don't put me into relationships, especially these fake ones. People write what they want to...I am just going to leave it at that. I don't think it is to be fought," he said.

Apparently 'Johnny Gaddaar' fame director Sriram Raghavan has finalised him for his next venture, but Varun said: "I am keen to work with him. I don't want to comment as I am not on the production of the film. As and when something is finalised, I guess they will make the announcement."
